Why is it important to pay attention to your diet when running?

Nutrition is essential for running, especially for longer distances. When running, your body uses a lot of energy, mainly in the form of carbohydrates, which are converted into glycogen in your muscles and liver. Replenishing these carbohydrates quickly ensures that you can maintain a certain pace for longer and do not get exhausted. In addition, the right nutrition also promotes faster recovery after exercise, allowing your muscles to repair themselves faster and you to be ready for your next workout.

Determine the time for sports nutrition

The moment you take sports nutrition has a big effect on your performance. There are three important moments to use nutrition: before, during and after running.

1. Before running

If you have an intense workout or race coming up, it’s important to eat light. Eating large meals right before your run can cause stomach upset. Instead, opt for a light carbohydrate meal, such as a sports bar or energy drink, about two hours beforehand. Powdered energy drinks that you mix with water are also a good option to boost your energy levels without putting too much strain on your stomach.

2. While running

When running, it is important not only to drink enough, but also to replenish your carbohydrates and electrolytes. Practice with sports drinks and gels during training sessions, so that your body gets used to it. Start drinking in time; don't wait until you are thirsty, because then it may already be too late. Drink about every 30 minutes and take a gel to keep your energy levels up. This will help prevent you from encountering 'the man with the hammer', a dip in energy that forces you to slow down or even stop.

3. After running

After running, it is very important to replenish your fluid and energy reserves with the right food within half an hour. This not only helps you recover faster, but also removes waste products from your muscles. After an intensive training or competition, a protein bar or protein shake can help your muscles recover and build.

Eating in preparation for training or competition

A healthy diet is the foundation for optimal running performance. For longer distances, you can increase your carbohydrate intake slightly in the days leading up to a race with healthy sources such as whole wheat pasta, sweet potato or bread. Just make sure not to overdo it with meals right before the race. A light, carbohydrate-rich snack, such as a gel or sports drink, just before the start can give your energy levels a final boost.

Other important running and nutrition tips

  • Drink enough: you lose a lot of fluid while running, so make sure you drink enough before, during and after running. Depending on the intensity and the weather conditions, you can expect to drink 0,7 to 1 liter per hour.
  • Experiment with nutrition during workouts: Try different nutrition options during your workouts, such as gels, bars and drinks, to find out what sports nutrition works for you. This will help you avoid surprises on race day.
  • Stay relaxed: nutrition is important, but don't try to make a science out of it. Listen to your body and eat according to your usual routine.

With the right nutrition you can optimize your running performance and increase your training enjoyment.
