There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad running clothes. Do you want to keep training during the fall and winter period? Then functional (running) clothing is an absolute must! Good running shoes (custom) are a first requirement when running and also the clothing you wear can make a significant contribution to your running pleasure. Running clothing should therefore be functional and comfortable. In the autumn, winter and early spring it is advisable to adapt your clothing to the weather conditions and the type of training you do. Functional clothing can of course also be used for other outdoor sports such as walking, boot camp, cycling, mountain biking and skating.

Functional clothing

What are the most important aspects of clothing? First of all, that it regulates your body heat and that perspiration is properly removed. In addition, it is important that it offers protection against the elements: wind, rain and cold. It is best to learn to think in layers that you coordinate with each other.

When running you work with 2 or 3 layers. The 1e layer is the base in the form of sports underwear that is worn directly and closely to the body. This layer absorbs and wicks away perspiration. This layer also provides insulation and regulates body heat. As a second layer, you wear a functional shirt with long sleeves or a jacket for protection against wind and/or rain. The choice for a 2e low plays a role especially when it is really cold or when you also walk and stand still during training to exercises to do. In other endurance and outdoor sports such as walking, cycling, skating you often use 3 layers of clothing in the winter.

For sports where you move a bit faster, such as skating or cycling, but also for fast running training and competitions, it is advisable to wear tight clothing as well.e of 3e low. This means you catch less wind and it doesn't act as a kind of braking parachute.

Underwear

Sports underwear is made of polyester or polypropylene fibres, with the emphasis for running mainly on the absorption and drainage of perspiration moisture. In cold weather or if you are naturally a bit more of a chilly person, you can also choose sports underwear with a thermal fibre. Do not wear cotton, because perspiration moisture and also rain are absorbed well, but not drained away. Cotton works like a sponge, it first absorbs itself completely and then starts to release moisture. You then cool down faster and the clothing becomes heavy and sticks, so far from comfortable.

In addition to the functionality of the fibers, the fit of the underwear is also important. It should fit well and not pinch. We therefore strongly recommend that you try on the underwear. The sizing varies per brand but also per type of underwear.

What do you choose?

To choose the right clothing and suitable sports underwear, you can answer a number of questions:

  1. Where are you going to exercise? Match your clothing to the location where you are going to exercise. In open fields, in the polder or along the beach, for example, you are more bothered by the wind than in the city or in the forest.
  2. What kind of training are you going to do? Choose clothing that fits the activity you are doing. For example, are you constantly moving or are you also standing still during training?
  3. Do you adjust your clothing to your personal situation? For example, consider whether you get cold quickly or warm quickly. The extent to which you perspire is also important.
